The spike in tomato prices is primarily due to a shortage in supply. Reports indicate that tomatoes, mostly sourced from Cameron Highlands, are facing scarcity. Feedback from farms suggests that many tomatoes are still green, contributing to the shortage. This, combined with high demand, is driving prices up.
2.Numbers Tell the Story:
According to retail price surveys conducted between January and February, tomatoes are now fetching RM6 to RM10 per kilogram for (XL) size.Wholesale prices, which were around RM5.30 to RM6.80 per kilogram, saw a significant increase on February 9 onwards, peaking at RM6.80 per kilogram.
3. Hope on the Horizon:
Despite the current situation, there’s optimism for a price drop soon. Post-Chinese New Year holidays, transportation companies resumed delivering vegetable supplies, which should ease the supply constraints and stabilise prices.
TIPs on how to save ✅:
- Order items which are higher in price in small quantities, just get the quantity as needed for temporary use , because the price can go down the next day.
- Using alternative sizes , maybe S or M size which are a few ringgits cheaper.
- Using alternative products to imitate the taste, like tamarind water, lemon juice can reduce the ingredient quantity.
- Most Importantly , Head Chefs or Managers must closely monitor the daily usage of these items to reduce wastage as each item saved from the bin are extra profits.
